Monetary Authority of Singapore and Ministry of Trade and Industry Announce Leadership Changes

On July 29, Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) announced that Chee Hong Tat, Minister for Transport and Second Minister for Finance, will be appointed to serve as Deputy Chairman of the MAS Board of Directors from August 23, 2024, to May 1, 2027. The announcement came roughly two months after his appointment to the MAS Board in June.

The MAS Deputy Chairman position was previously held by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Industry Gan Kim Yong, who succeeded Prime Minister Lawrence Wong to become Chairman in May. The current board members of the MAS are –

  • Mr. Heng Swee Keat, Deputy Prime Minister

  • Mr. Chee Hong Tat, Minister for Transport and Secong Minister for Finance

  • Mr. Lim Hng Kiang, Special Advisor, Ministry of Trade and Industry

On August 5, Temasek announced the appointment of Permanent Secretary (Policy) of the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) Gabriel Lim as head of corporate strategy, a newly created position in its senior leadership team. He will be retiring as Permanent Secretary on September 1 after 24 years in public service and will be joining Temasek on October 1. Prior to joining MTI, Mr. Lim served as Chief Executive Officer of then Media Development Authority (MDA), Second Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Communications and Information (now Ministry of Digital Development and Information) and Principal Private Secretary to former Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. In his new role, Mr. Lim is expected to support the implementation of Temasek’s 2030 strategy (T2030). Notably, Temasek mentioned that this is not the first time they welcomed a Permanent Secretary after leaving public service.

In a separate announcement, the Government’s Public Service Division said that Dr. Beh Swan Gin, Permanent Secretary (Development) at MTI will be re-designated as Permanent Secretary of the Ministry with effect from September 1. Furthermore, Mr. Jeffry Siow Chen Siang, Second Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Manpower, will be appointed concurrently as Second Permanent Secretary of MTI also on September 1.
