On May 2, the ASEAN Center for Energy (ACE) published a policy brief on a regional approach to renewable energy development and use in ASEAN. The policy brief outlines a long-term roadmap, identifying seven key strategies to strengthen ASEAN’s energy landscape, catalyze research and investment, and strengthen regional connectivity. For the first phase of the roadmap, ACE recommends ASEAN member states focus on establishing an enabling environment for greater renewable energy expansion, focusing on exploring regional standardization on a range of issues including permitting, procurement, and cross-border electricity trade. The policy brief maintains an optimistic outlook on ASEAN’s capacity to push for higher renewable energy ambitions, highlighting the importance of knowledge-sharing, electricity grid improvements, climate finance, and capacity building.
