Thailand’s Statements from the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 79)
On September 28, Mr. Maris Sangiampongsa, Thailand Minister of Foreign Affairs, delivered Thailand’s statement at the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA79) General Debate at UNHQ in New York where he reaffirmed the nation's commitment to advancing people-centered, economic-oriented policies aimed at fostering stability and sustainable development. Maris underlined how crucial it is to restructure the UN in order to effectively address pressing global issues, such as enhancing world peace and security. The Minister underlined Thailand's commitment to Myanmar's predicament and stressed the need for Myanmar to lead and own any resolution. In demonstrating a commitment to regional security and cooperation, he underlined Thailand's readiness to provide humanitarian aid in support of regional peace initiatives.
Furthermore, Maris articulated Thailand's proactive approach to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by promoting international cooperation, particularly through aspirations for membership in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the BRICS group. He stressed the urgency of collective action to confront critical issues such as climate change, which has far-reaching implications for human rights and security. The Minister also highlighted Thailand’s unwavering dedication to protecting human rights and fostering social equality, as evidenced by its candidacy for the United Nations Human Rights Council for the term 2025-2027. He called for a united political will to safeguard prosperity and underscored Thailand's role as a bridge-builder, committed to fostering dialogue and trust among nations. Following the UN General Assembly, Maris engaged with representatives from various Thai associations, the business sector, and media in New York, reinforcing Thailand's diplomatic efforts on the global stage.
