Thailand Advocates for Digital Innovation, Healthcare Leadership, and Sustainable Growth at APEC Economic Leaders’ Week
From November 11-17, Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra attended the 31st APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in Lima, Peru, where she highlighted Thailand's significant efforts to foster economic stability, digital innovation, and social inclusion. Throughout the summit, the Prime Minister emphasized key initiatives such as the transformation of Thailand’s digital economy, the push for an expanded Asia-Pacific Free Trade Area (FTAAP), and a steadfast commitment to sustainable economic development. Prime Minister Paetongtarn outlined Thailand’s readiness to embrace new trade opportunities, with a particular focus on creating a more inclusive and resilient economic landscape that benefits vulnerable populations, small businesses, and digital entrepreneurs.
A major topic of discussion at the Summit was Thailand’s drive to utilize digital technologies as a catalyst for economic growth. Prime Minister Paetongtarn presented Thailand’s vision to enhance digital infrastructure, integrate artificial intelligence (AI) across various sectors, and develop digital skills and fostering strong public-private sector collaboration to build a workforce that is well-equipped to navigate future technological advancements.
Thailand’s leadership in healthcare was another highlight, with the Prime Minister showcasing the nation’s inclusive healthcare policies, notably its universal healthcare system, which has provided affordable services to over 70 million citizens. The Prime Minister highlighted how Thailand is integrating digital tools and telemedicine into its healthcare system to improve service delivery and address the needs of an aging population. This forward-thinking approach positions Thailand as a leader in the wellness and medical tourism sectors, opening up significant opportunities for investment in healthcare services, clinical research, and wellness tourism.
Thailand also joined 20 other nations in reaffirming the APEC Putrajaya Vision 2040, aiming for an open, dynamic, resilient, and peaceful community by 2040. Under the theme “Empower. Include. Grow.”, the leaders emphasized inclusive economic growth, addressing challenges such as climate change, trade, food and energy security, and the digital divide.
