Malaysia at COP29: Advancing Climate Action and Regional Collaboration
Malaysia's participation at the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) was led by Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad. The country highlighted ongoing initiatives such as the establishment of the Carbon Market Associations, collaborations with Azerbaijan, and initiatives with Japan in carbon capture and storage (CCS). The Malaysia Pavilion’s theme, "Shift for Sustainability — Climate Action Now,” served as a hub for knowledge exchange and had more than 1,400 global visitors and 80 Malaysian organizations participating.
Minister Nik Nazmi emphasized the importance of equitable climate finance and adaptation, particularly for Southeast Asia. He advocated for grants-based funding mechanisms to avoid burdening developing nations with unsustainable debt. Malaysia is keen to accelerate its energy transition by retiring coal-fired power plants early and exploring solutions such as carbon capture and credits.
Looking ahead, Malaysia plans to build on the momentum from COP29. The maritime nation is committed to fostering transboundary collaboration on climate actions within ASEAN and beyond. Moreover, Minister Nazmi’s vision includes amplifying regional voices in global climate discourse, operationalizing Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, and advancing the Loss and Damage Fund to support vulnerable nations. These efforts align with Malaysia’s 2025 ASEAN chairmanship vision on decarbonization, biodiversity preservation, and climate equity.
