The International Energy Association (IEA) Opens Regional Centre in Singapore
The Government of Singapore and the IEA recently announced the joint establishment of the IEA Regional Cooperation Centre in Singapore. The launch of this venue will inaugurate the IEA’s first physical presence outside of its Paris headquarters. Singapore joined the IEA as an association country in 2016 and has since sought to enhance its role as a hub for facilitating dialogues and directing energy investment. An agency dedicated to maintaining energy security and forwarding clean energy transitions, the IEA will utilize the strategically located center as a means to engage critical ASEAN states and beyond beginning in the second half of 2024.
This year being the IEA’s 50th anniversary, the agency has renewed its 21st century objectives to emphasize energy security in the context of pressing geopolitical tensions and decarbonization in the face of climate change. According to IEA Executive Director Dr Fatih Birol, the center “will energize the region’s [and the world’s] decarbonization journey while continuing to provide advice on energy security and resilience.” The center aims to practically train, equip, and grant access and funding to domestic and foreign energy developers operating in ASEAN and abroad. This is also to include proliferation of improved technologies and enhancing energy storage, sharing, and cross border transportation capabilities, addressing the concerns of not just ASEAN energy ministries, but also those working with them.
