Indonesia is advancing its strategic ambitions and defense modernization through the procurement and domestic production of autonomous systems. The recent procurement of 60 Turkish TB3 drones with an agreement to produce them locally is set to enhance domestic defense industry capabilities, while exploring the purchase of a retired Italian aircraft carrier for potential conversion into a dedicated drone carrier platform highlights ambitious modernization goals. Concurrently, legislation has been passed to allow active-duty military personnel greater eligibility for civilian government roles, signaling an increased integration of military influence into civilian governance. While the administration will need to tactfully navigate domestic sensitivities associated with an expanding role of the military, it may present new opportunities for the private sector if security-focused leaders are granted greater authority.
