Celebrating 75 Years of U.S. - Cambodia Diplomatic Relations
On January 24, Cambodia and the United States commemorated the 75th anniversary of their diplomatic relationship with a gala reception at the National Museum of Cambodia in Phnom Penh. Co-hosted by the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts and the U.S. Embassy, the event celebrated the enduring partnership between the two nations, marked by collaboration across trade, cultural preservation, education, and security. Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn lauded the progress of bilateral ties, emphasizing mutual respect and the positive momentum observed in recent years, including the resumption of military cooperation.
A central highlight of the evening was the repatriation of looted Cambodian cultural artefacts, facilitated by U.S. authorities. These treasures, now housed at the National Museum, symbolize justice and the U.S.’s commitment to preserving Cambodia’s heritage. Culture Minister Phoeurng Sackona emphasized that the return of these artefacts restores physical objects and the nation's history and identity. Additionally, U.S. contributions of over $6 million to cultural preservation efforts, alongside broader investments in economic development and agricultural support, were recognized as pivotal to strengthening bilateral relations.
U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Bridgette Walker reiterated the shared values underpinning this partnership. She highlighted U.S. support for Cambodia’s development through initiatives like USAID’s agricultural programs and the fostering of people-to-people connections through educational exchanges. With Cambodia serving as ASEAN’s U.S. Country Coordinator, both nations expressed optimism about exploring new avenues for collaboration to ensure regional prosperity and stability, underlining a shared commitment to progress, peace, and mutual respect.
