On August 26, 2024, Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim of Malaysia held the 25th Annual Leaders' Consultation between the two nations, celebrating key milestones, including their 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations. The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing cooperation in various areas such as security, agriculture, and economic integration. They discussed the importance of high-level, strategic engagements and people-to-people ties, with a focus on student exchanges and cultural initiatives.

In terms of deliverables, both leaders noted progress in boundary demarcation on their shared island of Borneo, energy cooperation amidst the green transition, and defense bolstering. They emphasized the need for continued dialogue on geopolitical issues, including the domestic situation in Myanmar and regional conflict in the Middle East. The two heads of government are committed to supporting ASEAN’s goals, especially as Malaysia takes on the chairmanship next year. The consultation concluded with plans for the next meeting in Malaysia in 2025.
